NEW YORK (WABC) -- Jerry Leslie now sees there is hope and a way out of a desperate situation.

As people struggle to hang onto jobs to pay for the rising price of food and keep a roof over their head, an economy in crisis only adds to that desperation.

"I'm just trying to make ends meet. Very hard right now," he said. After nearly losing his apartment six weeks ago, Jerry finds help at SingleStop, a program that's part of the larger Center for Urban Community Services. You can check out their website by going to www.cucs.org.

"This is probably the worst that we've seen it," assistant director Megan Sergi.

Normally seeing 40 low income and working poor families a month, that's now doubled. Families are feeling out of control.

SingleStop helps families in trouble by connecting them with government funds and services intended for them.

The program was launched by the Robin Hood Foundation. It was incorporated as a non-profit in March, 2007. In its first five years, SingleStop USA will deliver $2 billion in benefits to up to a million households.
